Will I receive a list of schools to apply to?
Each of our campuses have partnerships with schools in their community. Relay will coordinate interviews for you based on school need, your certification area eligibility, and preferences that both you and the schools have shared with Relay.
What is the time frame for interviewing with schools and securing a placement?
The timeline for interviewing and securing a residency placement varies by campus and school partner. As you can imagine, schools have a number of variables affecting their hiring timeline, including expected vacancies, projected student enrollment, and finalized budgets. To that end, some schools are ready to interview as early as December while others need considerably more time and may not expect to interview or hire residents until late spring. For this reason, between the time you are invited to be a residency candidate and the time you are interviewing with a school, we ask that you be patient and prepared so that you are ready when it is time to interview. Relay’s school partners believe in the positive impact of the residency and they are eager to meet and hire residency candidates like you who have the potential to become strong lead teachers in their school community.
What areas of the city are the schools located in?
Most of our campuses have multiple partnerships in their city. While we know that you are eager to know exactly which part of a city you may be placed in, we strongly encourage you to be open and flexible with your placement location with the understanding that we are partnering with schools that have the highest need to add more talented teachers to their school community. If you feel that you have a compelling reason to ask for placement within a particular area, please contact the Director of Engagement, Brittany Gibson, who will be supporting you throughout the placement process.
How will interviews work if I currently live outside of the region where I am placed?
We understand that not all candidates currently live in the city where they will be completing their residency. That being the case, we have worked with our partners to encourage them to be accommodating for our candidates.
Typically, our partners will make one of two accommodations: (1) they may conduct an interview over a video chat service such as Zoom; or (2) they may reimburse candidates for their travel expenses. Ultimately, this policy is determined by each partner independently. If you have a concern about reimbursement for interview travel, please let us know well in advance of your interview and we will work with you to address the issue and alleviate any concerns.
