Admissions & Enrollment
My undergraduate institution does not issue electronic transcripts. Where can I send my hard copy transcript?
At this time, our main office in NYC is unable to receive hard copy transcripts. For Relay Houston incoming students, you may mail your official transcript to the Relay Houston office located at 7447 Harwin Dr. Ste 249, Houston, TX 77036. If your institution is able to send electronic transcripts, review this article for guidance.
What is the ESL concentration?
Concentrations at Relay are similar to a minor in undergrad. All students enrolled in the Relay Teaching Residency at Relay Houston are automatically enrolled in the ESL concentration per the request of our district & charter network partners. All students will learn more about this concentration during Summer Session and can choose to opt-in or opt-out following the course overview. There is no additional cost for this course.
Do I need to complete the items listed under the Certification section of my Application status page?
No, please do not complete any of the items listed on your Certification Checklist. Residents will learn more about these items during Certification Orientation. Any items submitted prior to 7/13/20 will need to be resubmitted. For now, your primary responsibility is to study for your TExES Content Test (see Certification below).

What should I be studying for the TExES content test?
Please review the Content Test Preparation Guide for guidance and additional FAQs.
When will I take the TExES content test?
All certification exams require testing permissions authorized by an educator preparation program. During Summer Session, you will take a diagnostic test to determine your next steps. The goal is to pass the official exam as early as possible in your teaching career.
When is the deadline to pass the TExES content test?
It depends. Most employers require a passed exam prior to hiring for lead teaching positions. In addition, there are several financial benefits to passing as early as possible.
Will I be certified after passing the TExES Content Test?
No, the TExES content test is one of several requirements towards earning a Texas standard certificate. It is one of several required exams and requires the most preparation. For more information on the certification requirements, please review the Texas Certification Handbook.
Do I have to get certified?
Certification is not required for the Relay Teaching Residency but is a requirement for your employer. There is no administrative fee to get certified through Relay, but there are individual expenses associated with completing the certification requirements.
How much does it cost to become certified?
All candidates are responsible for the costs associated with supplemental study materials, testing, and application fees paid directly to the Texas Education Agency. We recommend budgeting at least $600 for certification expenses in the first year.
I received my teaching placement. How can I change my certification field?
Please schedule a phone call here to discuss your certification options. We will determine eligibility and advise you on next steps.
Do I have to apply to be an AmeriCorps member?
Yes. All incoming Relay Teaching Residents will apply to be an AmeriCorps member. Through AmeriCorps, students can earn a Segal Education Award that can be applied to their tuition.
When can I complete the AmeriCorps application?
Beginning on July 6th, all admitted Relay Houston Teaching Residents can complete their AmeriCorps application through their Canvas account.
