General Questions
Does the edTPA transfer to other states?
In most cases, yes. Requirements and assessment options vary from state to state, but the majority of states — roughly 40 — use the edTPA to evaluate new teacher readiness. For specific details about which edTPA is right for the state where you're seeking licensure, contact that state's office of educator licensing.
I co-teach my subject. Do I need to be the lead teacher for my Task 2 video?
Yes. The edTPA handbooks require that you serve as the lead teacher during all lessons captured in your video. The lead teacher is the one with the primary responsibility for teaching the subject area in which you are seeking certification.
My certification is in elementary education, but I teach PE, art, or dance. Can I use another teacher's classroom?
Yes, but a few conditions apply. You must be the lead or the only teacher in the classroom for the entire learning segment, and you must be the one providing feedback on student assessments.
When choosing whose classroom to use, try to pair with a teacher you already co-teach with, or one who shares students with you. That way the students already know you, you know them, and you can explain the arrangement well in advance. You may also use that teacher's existing lesson plans as long as you cite your sources properly.
Is there a scoring advantage to filming a small group instead of a full class?
No. There's no scoring advantage or disadvantage to filming in a small group versus a full class. Just make sure that the required minimum number of students is visible in your video, and if you do film with a small group, explain in your Context for Learning that small-group instruction is one of your regular teaching responsibilities — in your classroom and in your school.
Can I use a virtual classroom for my Task 2 learning segment?
Yes. Task 2 requires you to record yourself teaching your learning segment, and that segment can be taught either in person or synchronously in a virtual learning environment. Whichever setting you teach in, review your handbook's video guidelines carefully before you film.
Scoring and Feedback
Will I receive feedback on my submission?
No. When your scores are released, you'll receive a score for each rubric and a cumulative total score. Written qualitative feedback is not provided.
